Food safety for residents

How to spot foodborne illness, how to report it, and how to keep food safe at home.

Report a food complaintCall (573) 785-8478

Think you got sick from food?

Call (573) 785-8478 and ask for environmental health. Reporting matters even if you feel better, because a single report is often what lets the department find an outbreak before more people get sick. Staff will ask what you ate, when, where, and what symptoms you had.

Food recalls

When a recall affects Butler County, it is posted on News & Health Alerts. National recall notices are maintained by the FDA and USDA and are linked at the source, so you always see the current version.

Safe handling at home

Most foodborne illness at home comes down to four things.

1

Clean hands and surfaces

2

Separate raw meat from ready-to-eat food

3

Cook to a safe internal temperature

4

Chill promptly

Farmers markets and home-prepared foods

Missouri DHSS publishes guidelines for food operations at farmers markets and for safe preparation of home-canned jams, jellies, honey, baked goods, salsa, and other acidified foods — which matters in a county with a lot of home canning. Those guidelines are linked to the DHSS source.
